Autism Awareness Month

Thursday, April 1, 2021

In 1970, the Autism Society (AAM) launched an ongoing nationwide effort to promote autism awareness and assure that all those affected by autism are able to achieve the highest possible quality of life. In 1972, the Autism Society established National Autistic Children’s Week which has since evolved into Autism Acceptance Month. According to the Autism Society, the prevalence of autism in the United States has risen from 1 in 125 children in 2010 to 1 in 54 in 2020 & recognizing this continued increase, the goal for Autism Awareness Month is to further increase awareness about autism signs, symptoms & opportunities through: information & referrals, events, printable & digital resources, & community partnerships with businesses & organizations dedicated to building inclusive experiences. This year's theme is #CelebrateDifferences & focuses on providing information and resources for communities to be more aware of autism, promote acceptance, & be more inclusive in everyday life.
