Bird of the Year

Celebrate becoming a certified Bird City with us and learn more about our bird of the year! Each year we choose a bird and follow its journey through migration, breeding, what it eats and where it lives. With over 200 species of birds found in Cedar Hill, there is so much to learn!

Our 2025 Bird City bird of the year is the Painted Bunting (Azulillo Sietecolores en Espanol), Passerina ciris

Members of the Cardinal family, this striking bird is hard to miss during migration season. The French name of the Painted Bunting, nonpareil, means "without equal." Both the male (top photo, photo by Don Faulkner) and female (bottom photo, photo by Susan Young) have distinctive plumage.

Locations that you can find the Painted Bunting in Cedar Hill include: Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center, Cedar Hill State Park and our Signature Park. Best time to look for them are between mid-March to July along edge habitats.
